Huangshan, China
Residential
2009-2017
While providing the conveniences of modern living, Huangshan Mountain Village affirms the significance of this culturally important mountain terrain. It was composed with an eye to the local topography, and each building is a different height so that the staggered array of the mountains is visually maintained.
The residential units are envisioned as quiet retreats. Each one boasts an expansive balcony whose organic lines correspond to the topographic contours of the surrounding mountainous terrain. Extending the interior to the exterior, they provide plenty of outdoor space. Pathways have been determined by the landscape. They naturally meander through the trees and amid the architecture, offering unique access to the site and engaging in a dialogue with the mountains, the lake, and the sky.
The village seems to grow organically out of the mountainous landscape, and its serene design is reflected in its natural setting. It offers a new type of vertical living that, while architecturally complementing the surrounding forest, also enhances the comfort and wellbeing of its inhabitants.
